The collection contains extensive files relating to Chinese Americans and Chinese overseas; including subjects such as Chinatowns, family associations, homeland relations, community politics, biographies of Chinese and Chinese Americans, organizations, sports, health, events, Chinese history, and issues affecting the Chinese community. Also included are research materials documenting the history of both Chinese American and Chinese overseas newspapers, as well as numerous sample titles collected by Lai.

Harry W. Lawton was born in Long Beach, CA on December 11, 1927. He was a writer, journalist, editor, historian, and a lecturer at the University of California, Riverside. Him Mark Lai was born in San Francisco on November 1, 1925. He worked from 1953-1984 as a mechanical engineer for the Bechtel Corporation. By avocation, he is a historian and acknowledged as the dean of Chinese American Studies. He has written numerous books and articles relating to Chinese American history and held teaching positions at San Francisco State University and the University of California, Berkeley.
